Hill Country Fun Near San Antonio

One great thing about living in San Antonio is that it’s on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, a scenic area encompassing several town and communities near San Antonio. Once of these is the town of New Braunfels, which is about 30 miles northeast of San Antonio, and where I celebrated Father’s Day this year. We met our son and his wife at the Huisache Grill, just off the historic town square. I had the mixed grill, which comes with a choice of soup or salad. I had fantastic tortilla soup. The plate comes with beef medallions, shrimp, quail and chicken tenders. Absolutely great!

After dinner, we went to the Uptown Piano Bar just north of the traffic circle on San Antonio Street. It is in the basement of the historic Prince Solms Inn, which is now a bed and breakfast. The pianist takes requests and can play nearly anything. Most of his songs are from the 50’s through the mid-90’s. The last two times I have been there, he has invited someone from the audience to come up and sing a favorite song while he plays it.

San Antonio Street south of the circle has a surprisingly jumping nightlife featuring the Phoenix Saloon (country western) and AJ’s Ale House, which is a mix of country western and rock.

San Antonio itself has plenty to do and lots of great places to eat. But for a change of pace, check out New Braunfels or one of the other communities in the Hill Country. You can find out more about the Texas Hill Country at www.texashillcountry.com.
